What to eat the day after drinking

The morning after a work dinner, two thoughts arrive at once: “I need to settle my stomach” and “I need to make up for what I ate last night”. They clash — and usually both fail.

Don’t try to make up for it by starving

This is the most common mistake: “I ate 3,000 kcal yesterday, so I’ll only eat 1,000 kcal today.” The problem is that your body is already under stress the day after drinking. Add extreme restriction and hunger hits in the afternoon, and you end up overeating at dinner again.

What to recover first

Three main things happen in your body the day after drinking. Take care of them in this order.

  1. Dehydration — alcohol is a diuretic, so you lose water. Drink more water than usual
  2. Electrolytes — sodium and potassium leave along with the water. That’s why food with broth helps
  3. Blood sugar — metabolizing alcohol can lower blood sugar. Don’t cut carbs out entirely

This explains much of why Korean hangover soup (haejangguk) feels like it works. It isn’t a special ingredient — it fills you up on water, electrolytes and carbohydrates all at once.

How to choose hangover food

DishRough caloriesVerdict
Dried pollack soup · bean sprout soup set mealabout 500 kcalThe safest choice
Doenjang (soybean paste) stew set mealabout 600 kcalGets you protein too
Galbitang (short rib soup)about 620 kcalHigh in protein, good for recovery
Kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup)about 550 kcalWarm and easy on the stomach
Ramyeon (instant noodles)about 500 kcalHigh sodium can make swelling worse
“Hangover” pork bellyabout 900+ kcalThe fat makes digestion harder

Try planning the day like this

  • Breakfast — a glass or two of water first. If you’re not hungry, keep it light with a banana or yogurt
  • Lunch — a set meal with soup. If you’re worried about sodium, only have half the broth
  • Snack — fruit or a boiled egg, to head off afternoon hunger
  • Dinner — as usual. Get your protein and vegetables in and skip the late-night snack

The key is “eat as usual, just skip the late-night snack”. No special detox needed.

What you can do at the table

  • Drink water between drinks — it makes the biggest difference the next day
  • Don’t start on an empty stomach
  • Reach for grilled food, sashimi or vegetables before fried snacks
  • Skip the carb finale (fried rice, ramyeon) once and you cut 300–500 kcal

FAQ

Can I exercise after a hangover meal?

We don’t recommend intense exercise while dehydrated. A light walk or stretching is fine; it’s safer to rehydrate fully and return to your usual intensity the next day.

How many calories are in the alcohol itself?

Alcohol has about 7 kcal per 1 g — more than carbohydrate or protein. 1 bottle of soju is about 400 kcal, and 500 ml of beer about 200 kcal. Add the food that comes with it and it’s easy to pass 1,000 kcal in one sitting.

Do hangover remedy drinks help?

Some people feel they ease the discomfort, depending on the product, but they don’t remove the burden alcohol puts on your body. Rehydrating and drinking less are more reliable.
